Rear cockpit / deck is terrific set-up for fishing or entertaining/lounging.

Swim platform with ladder makes for easy access.

One engine just rebuilt (starboard) 2021 ($14,000 cost, with ~5 hours).

Twin engine for easy maneuverability.

From Boating World Magazine, February 1, 1988 (www.boatingworld.com/boattests/carver-santego-27/). “… Carver Yachts … Santego 27 is a boat to be proud of.

Designed for active, water-oriented people who need a cockpit for fishing, swimming or diving, this surprisingly spacious 27-foot boat provides sleeping accommodations for six adults.

Which is quite a surprise, considering all the 40 foot sportfishers on the market with bunks for four people.

The boat is sporty, with a forward flying bridge… and a raked transom.

It looks just like what it is: a boat to have fun in.

The 27-footer is easily boarded from the large swim step and through a notch in the transom to the cockpit.

Fuel fillers are thoughtfully installed on the transom, notable because spilled fuel will go in the bay rather than on the deck or into the bilge.

The Santego 27 is versatile, too: a padded bench runs nearly the width of the transom in the cockpit, but it can be removed if a fighting chair is more your style.

Skippers who tinker around in their engine rooms will be impressed with the new 27-footer, since the cockpit hatch allows easy access to engines and batteries for normal servicing.

From the cockpit, you pass through a sliding glass door to get to the saloon.

The electrical panel is on the starboard bulkhead, convenient to both the saloon and the cockpit.

A simple keyed lock gives access to the back of the panel and the tagged, color-coded wiring.

To the port side of the companionway is the area designated by Carver as the midship stateroom: A curtain hidden in a closet can be brought out when privacy is needed, isolating a convertible sofa, much like a sleeper on a train, except that the large angled window facing aft gives it the warmth and openness of a solarium.

Forward of this aft stateroom is the head, which includes a shower.

Hot water is supplied from either an engine heat exchanger or a six gallon electric water heater.

Six gallons may not sound like much, but with a 41-gallon fresh water tank on board, conservation will always be a high priority.

Across to the starboard side is the galley, with a two-burner stove, stainless steel sink and a small refrigerator.

The optional combination electric/alcohol stove and electric refrigerator are, no doubt, more convenient and worth the extra expense.

Looking forward, a U-shaped dinette extends athwartship, before a mirrored bulkhead.

The dinette converts into a roomy double berth and the mirror adds a feeling of spaciousness to the cabin.

A hexagonal opening in the mirrored bulkhead leads to the forepeak V-berth, and the hexagon shape is repeated with the mirrored hatch to the chain locker forward.

This use of duplicate forms and reflections creates the illusion that the forepeak extends into infinity.

Illusions aside, Carver achieves openness by extending the cabin sides out to the gunwhales.

This provides more headroom and space for the boat’s many cabinets. … berths for six adults Out in the cockpit, a teak ladder leads to the flying bridge, which is covered by an optional bimini top.

The canvas and plastic bridge encloser makes the Carver 27 Santego a boat for all seasons.

A cushioned, L-shaped settee provides seating for four crew members adjacent to the helm station, with an individual, adjustable chair for the skipper.

From this perch, the view is unobscured in every direction for safe maneuvering in tight quarters.

On firing up the twin MerCruiser engines with MerCruiser stern drives, the instruments jump to life but engine noise is at a minimum.

An optional engine synchronizer gauge helps keep the engine rpm balanced and limits vibration.

Fuel tank levels can be read individually with the use of a toggle selection switch.

Casting off and making way for open water, the 27 tracked dead straight at five miles per hour.

As the single lever Morse controls are inched forward, the boat responds by lifting higher and increasing speed, but still tracks true to the helm, feeling as if it is on rails.

At about 2,900 rpm, without using the trim tabs, the Carver Santego slides up onto its step and at 3,200 rpm is going in excess of 20 mph.

The Santego responds to the helms like a race car.

At a touch of the wheel, the chine digs into a turn.

Pull the wheel a bit more and the chine digs in harder and the boat turns tighter, with no skidding.

The hull responsible for this kind of performance is a modified-V, warped plane, which has a sharp stem entry and decreases to an 8 degree deadrise at the transom.

Four lifting strakes are incorporated into the bottom, and wide hard chines give additional lift and turning stability.

The 27’s 10 foot beam and 8,400 pound displacement (about 2,000 more pounds than comparable boats) also contribute to its solid feel.

A part of the Carver’s weight can be attributed to its construction.

The hull is totally laid up by hand, with mat and woven roving fiberglass, which overlaps at the keel and chines for additional strength.

Inside, all latitudinal and longitudinal stringers are bonded to the hull with 24 ounce roving.

Maneuvers at slow speed are easily performed in the Santego, as with most twin-screw craft.

The side mounted controls are a slight inconvenience if you are accustomed to using both hands to change gears, but with the stern drives on a 27 foot boat, it’s almost unnecessary.

Getting back into a narrow slip is no problem.

Carver has created a comparatively small boat with a maximum of sleeping accommodations, yet has maintained its openness to produce a big boat feel.

Rather than forget about the under 30-foot boat buyer, the company has provided him with a new option - more boat within the same dimensions.
